Iranian Leader Calls West To Resolve Nuclear Row
Nji Che - All Headline News African Correspondent Tehran, Iran (AHN) - Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Thursday called western powers to find a solution to the long running nuclear standoff through dialogue. Ahmadinejad, however, said his country would not stop uranium enrichment. Reuters quotes him telling a rally aired on state TV, "We are in favor of talks. We are in favor of negotiations, peace and reaching an understanding but in the framework of law, regulations and justice." He added that, "Fortunately, some European countries want talks and we hope they appreciate this opportunity given to them by the Iranian nation to change their behavior of the past 27 years." The European Union on Wednesday warned that Iran was inviting sanctions upon itself by its refusal to halt uranium enrichment. But Tehran maintained it would not give up its right to enrichment. Earlier this week, the United States called on Iran to suspend its nuclear program, without which the international community would impose sanctions on Tehran. But a senior Iranian official said halting nuclear work was not a solution to the long running dispute. Instead, Mohammad Saeedi, the deputy leader of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, proposed that France should invest in Iran's atomic industry, so that Paris can oversee the nature and extent of Tehran's atomic pursuit.
