Lebanese Army Prevents Hezbollah Demonstration On Israel Border
Ryan R. Jones - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Jerusalem, Israel (AHN) - In one of the first signs that it is now in control of southern Lebanon, the Lebanese army Wednesday prevented hundreds of Hezbollah supporters from reaching the border with Israel and holding a mass demonstration there. According to witnesses cited by The Jerusalem Post, army vehicles blocked the path of several buses transporting some 100 demonstrators each. After lengthy negotiations, the army agreed to let a small group of children proceed to the border to hang a large insulting caricature of US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. When the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) completed their withdrawal from southern Lebanon last week, Defense Minister Amir Peretz insisted Israel would no longer allow mass Hezbollah demonstrations along the border. Most demonstrations in the past were characterized by stone throwing attacks against Israeli soldiers on the other side of the border. IDF Chief of Staff Dan Halutz said that would no longer be permitted, and granted permission to soldiers to fire at the legs of any demonstrators who act in a violent manner. An IDF officer told Ynet Wednesday that the army will also not hesitate to kill anyone on the Lebanese side of the border that it deems to be a threat to national security.
