Israeli General Criticizes Israeli Leadership Over War
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - An Israeli general has been criticized after calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and chief of staff Dan Halutz over the Lebanon war, an army statement said Wednesday. General Yiftah Ron Tal, who had commanded the ground troops in Lebanon during the monthlong war, was summoned by Halutz to explain his comments. Over the past two days, Ron Tal has spoken to the press with criticism of the war. "From a military point of view, the war ended in failure and the chief of staff and prime minister should take responsibility and resign," Ron Tal said. The general also denounced Israel's lack of preparedness for the war that, in his mind, failed to achieve its main objectives of freeing the two soldiers seized by Hezbollah and preventing the Shiite group from firing rockets into Israel. "Following declarations from General Ron Tal to the press, the army spokesman estimates that it is not acceptable for an officer on leave but who still receives his salary from the army to deliver criticism of the state leadership ahead of his departure," an army statement replied.
