Serial Blasts Kill 16 In Baghdad
Nji Che - All Headline News African Correspondent Baghdad, Iraq (AHN) - A succession of bombs ripped through a shopping district in Baghdad on Wednesday, killing 16 people and injuring 87 others. Five other people and two U.S. soldiers were killed in scattered attacks around the country. The U.S. and Iraqi military have combed the Iraqi capital in search of weapons, militiamen and insurgents. The operation, which was launched in August, has seen the capture of militants and discovery of hidden weapons. Sectarian violence between Sunni insurgents and Shiite militias has killed thousands despite the U.S. military's move to beef up the number of troops in Baghdad. Wednesday's blasts killed 16 civilians and wounded 87, including 15 policemen. Since Saturday, the U.S. military has confirmed the death of 17 troops. Last month, Sunni tribal leaders in Iraq met with Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and pledged their support for his government. The group, which led by Sattar al-Buzayi, a Sunni sheikh from the Anbar province, vowed to drive al Qaeda fighters out of Iraq.
