Ukraine Eyes Joint Space Program With Israel
Ryan R. Jones - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Jerusalem, Israel (AHN) - Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko said Tuesday that he plans to visit Israel on November 7 with the intent of sowing the seeds of a joint space program between his nation and the Jewish state. Following a meeting with Israeli Vice Premier Shimon Peres in Berlin, Yushchenko told Israel's Ynet, "I believe in cooperation between Israel and the Ukraine in the field of space." Ukrainian engineers and scientists were among the leaders of the Soviet Union's long-range missile and space programs. "We were among the developers of the Sputnik in the days of the former Soviet Union, and we have a long-range missile industry and much knowledge that we can share with Israel," Yushchenko said. He stressed, however, that any joint projects will be for "peaceful purposes." Peres meanwhile saw the offer as an opportunity to further develop Israel's missile shield technology aimed at defending the country against foreign attacks, such as from Iran's long-range Shihab-3 missile. The Israeli reciprocated by offering Israel's expertise in the field of nanotechnology.
