Iranian Cleric Calls Pope Benedict Comments An "Act Of Madness"
Nji Che - All Headline News African Correspondent Tehran, Iran (AHN) - An extremist Iranian cleric on Friday described Pope Benedict XVI's comments on the Prophet Mohammed and the Muslim faith as an "act of madness," adding that the Pope disgraced himself. Reuters quotes Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati, leader of the Guardian Council, a constitutional watchdog, as saying, "It was an act of madness what the Pope did and he disgraced himself and the system he represents." The cleric added that, "His comments showed either that he did not have information on Islam, or the he had information and did injustice to Islam, or that he had fallen into a trap." Earlier this week, the Pope called Christian and Muslim believers to reject all forms of violence. He was speaking on Monday while addressing Muslim ambassadors during a meeting to defuse tension triggered by his comments which portrayed Islam as a violent religion.
