Nigeria's Ruling Party Suspends Vice President Abubakar
Nji Che - All Headline News African Correspondent Abuja, Nigeria (AHN) - Nigeria's ruling party on Thursday suspended vice president Atiku Abubaka for three months. The move came a day after the Senate voted to investigate fraud allegations levied against him by President Olusegun Obasanjo. Earlier this month, Obasanjo released a report that accused Abubakar of embezzling millions of dollars from funds earmarked to train young recruits into Nigeria's rich oil industry. Abubakar has denied the allegations. One of his aides was arrested last week after he accused President Obasanjo of graft. Many Nigerians believe the current tension that prevails between the two men, is caused by Abubakar's role in preventing Obasanjo from contesting a third term. The vice-president has plans for the presidency. He is seeking the nomination of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP). Abubakar believes he is the target of a political conspiracy for revenge. The tradition of power greed in Africa also continues. The former Nigerian military ruler Gen Ibrahim Babangida is also seeking the PDP nomination. Obasanjo has not given his support to both aspirants.
