Syria Won't Drop Support For Terrorists
Ryan R. Jones - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Jerusalem, Israel (AHN) - The Syrian regime made clear Thursday that it has no intention of complying with U.S. and Israeli demands that it end support for terrorist organizations dedicated to Israel's destruction. An editorial published in the government newspaper Baath stated, "Syria is more determined (than ever) to stand by the resistance until the land is liberated and Israel is defeated." In particular, Washington and Jerusalem want Syria to stop harboring and supporting Hamas and Hezbollah, both of which refuse to recognize Israel's right to exist and regularly conduct terrorist operations against the Jewish state. In an interview on Israel Radio Thursday, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said any peace overtures coming out of Damascus could not be taken seriously until Syria ended its relationship with such groups. "No base for negotiations with Syria exists because this country continuously conducts terrorist activities against Israel through Hamas, Islamic Jihad and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine," said Olmert, listing some of the other Palestinian groups that maintain headquarters in Damascus. Earlier in the week, Syrian President Bashar Assad told the German magazine Der Speigel that his nation "wants peace with Israel."
