Time Not Right For Pakistan To Recognize Israel
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - Pakistan said that to recognize Israel at this moment in history would be political suicide. President Pervez Musharraf said that his government will eventually have to recognize the state of Israel, but that time is not today. Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly last week, Pakistan's President argued that if Islamabad were to recognize Israel it would end hopes of Pakistan serving as a bridge between the Muslim world and the west. "We cannot do something that sidelines us from the Muslim world," Musharraf said this week at the Weill Cornell Medical College. The Pakistani President is currently promoting his new autobiography in the United States. "It must be done eventually," the President said, adding that the Palestinian issue must be resolved beforehand, as it is the major contributing factor in every conflict in the Middle East. He added that Pakistan would only consider formally recognizing the state of Israel after the creation of an independent Palestinian state alongside the Jewish state.
