Bangkok's New Airport Opens
Mary K. Brunskill - All Headline News Staff Writer Bangkok, Thailand (AHN) - Thailand's new Suvarnabhumi airport opened at 3 am. Thursday, and more than 800 flights with 120,000 passengers are scheduled to pass through the airport during its first day. The international airport, located 15 miles east of Bangkok, is taking the place of the old Don Muang airport and is anticipated to be Southeast Asia's busiest air transport hub. German architect Helmut Jahn designed the airport, which has an oval-shaped concourse and energy-efficient climate control. Last week authorities said it has the largest terminal building under one continuous roof in the world and the tallest control tower in the world. There were luggage delays on the airport's opening day, with some passengers waiting for hours. National carrier Thai Airways issued a public apology to hundreds of irritated customers, saying that luggage would be delivered to their homes and hotels "as soon as possible." Suvarnabhumi, which means "Golden Land" in Thai, has been under development for more than 40 years. It has been delayed multiple times due to construction problems and graft allegations.
