Sunni Leaders Pledge Support For Iraqi PM
Nji Che - All Headline News African Correspondent Baghdad, Iraq (AHN) - Sunni tribal leaders in Iraq met with Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki on Wednesday and pledged their support for his government. Two weeks ago, the group of Sunni leaders vowed to drive al Qaeda fighters out of Iraq. Sattar al-Buzayi, a Sunni sheikh from the Anbar province, who leads the Sunni tribal alliance against Osama bin Laden's followers, offered his support and that of about 15 other sheikhs to Prime Minister Maliki. Earlier this month, the sheikhs pledged to fight al Qaeda in a meeting at Buzayi's Ramadi residence. Reacting to the move, the prime minister told the Sunni leaders, "This is admired and respected by all Iraqis. We are fully prepared to back your efforts." Last Sunday, Maliki urged Iraqis to use the Muslim holy month of Ramadan to set aside their differences and seek national unity. He said Iraqis could either live side by side as brothers, or see their country turned into an arena for the settling of political accounts.
