Bangladesh Seeks More Support To Achieve MDGs
Siddique Islam - All Headline News Foreign Correspondent Dhaka, Bangladesh (AHN) - Bangladesh has called on the international community to fulfill their pledges and augment development assistance to help least developed countries (LDCs) attain the millennium development goals (MDGs). Foreign Minister of Bangladesh M Morshed Khan made the call while delivering a statement at the 61st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. He emphasized that all exports from LDCs be given duty and quota free market access to ensure the economic growth necessary to eradicate poverty. "The Doha Development Round must resume to ensure special and differential treatment for the LDCs," he added. The Foreign Minister called for liberalizing free movement of labor and cited studies that showed that a modest commitment under GATS mode IV would offer substantial welfare gains for both developing and developed countries. "It may even exceed the gain of complete market liberalization in merchandise trade," he said. On the issue of terrorism, Khan reiterated Bangladesh's stand against terrorism in all its forms, saying: "It is professed and carried out by a handful few and the victims are the vast majority of innocent men, women and children."
