Hariri Rejects Hezbollah's Calls For New Government
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - Lebanese parliamentary majority leader Saad Hariri rejected calls from Hezbollah for any change in Lebanon's government. He said Tuesday that the Shiite group's calls for change in the makeup of the cabinet is non-democratic. "We reject any call for a change of the government by non-democratic ways," Hariri said following his iftar meal, the meal that breaks the fast during the holy month of Ramadan. Hariri also called on all militias in Lebanon to be disarmed, a statement clearly directed toward Hezbollah. The Shiite group was the only militia not to be disarmed at the end of the country's 15-year civil war that ended in 1990. The parliamentary leader's comments came only four days after Hezbollah's chief, Hassan Nasrallah gave a defiant speech on Friday in front of hundreds of thousands of supporters in which he called for a national unity government. Hariri and his allies, including Christian leader Samir Geagea and Druze chief Walid Jumblatt, have criticized Hezbollah's refusal to heed United Nations demands for their disarmament.
