Bulgaria To Send Help To Lebanon
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - Bulgaria announced Wednesday that they would send a frigate to Lebanon as part of the United Nations peacekeeping force in the war-torn nation. Bulgaria's Defense Minister Veselin Bliznakov told the state-run BTA news agency that Sofia intends to send a 130-crew frigate as soon as approval is given. "The frigate will leave with a 130-strong crew for a term between October 15 and December 15," Bliznakov was quoted as saying. Bliznakov added that once the government officially takes the decision a proposal bill will then be sent to parliament for final authorization. The decision will help bolster the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Lebanon and will increase the likelihood of a full Israeli pullout from portions of southern Lebanon following the 34-day war between the Jewish state and Hezbollah fighters. A ceasefire agreement from the U.N. stopped fighting on August 14. The resolution calls for the deployment of 15,000 international troops as well as 15,000 Lebanese soldiers to monitor the southern regions of the country once Israel has fully withdrawn from the country.
