Bulgaria And Romania To Join The EU; Turkey Out Of Luck
Matthew Borghese - All Headline News Staff Writer Paris, France (AHN) - The European Commission (EC) has recommended that former Soviet bloc nations Bulgaria and Romania join the European Union. However, the EC has also imposed "harsh" new guidelines which will ensure the nations won't be a drag on the Union's economy. In a report to the 25-nation Union as a whole, the Commission says the two Balkan nations would add to the alliance, and if all goes as planned, should join on January 1, 2007. According to ABC, the report presented by European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and the EU's expansion commissioner, Olli Rehn reads, "Bulgaria and Romania have made further progress to complete their preparations for membership, demonstrating their capacity to apply EU principles and legislation from Jan. 1, 2007." The Union is still debating over whether or not to allow economically challenged and ethnically different nations like Croatia and Turkey in.
