Indian Wounds Reopened By Musharraf's Memoirs
Jacob Cherian - All Headline News Staff Writer New Delhi, India (AHN) - Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf's memoirs have reopened wounds in India, giving the president an image of a military man who cannot be trusted. Officials in India refrained from commenting on the book on its release on Monday, but were annoyed by the Pakistan President's criticism of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's sincerity in the peace process between the two countries. They said that though the book was written in June, it was unfortunate that it was released shortly after a favorable meeting between the two leaders in Cuba. "In the Line of Fire" was also seen in a critical light by analysts on Tuesday. Chidanand Rajghatta, the Washington-based foreign editor of the Times of India told Reuters, "The book is full of chest-thumping machismo and self-aggrandizement." He added, "Musharraf seems unrepentant about most things that matter in India, be it Kargil, terrorism or infiltration." The government of India maintains that Pakistan is responsible for training and providing arms for militants, sent across the border in the fight against New Delhi's rule in the Kashmir region.
