Hitler's Art Up For Auction In The U.K.
Komfie Manalo - All Headline News Foreign Correspondent Cornwall, England (AHN) - The prestigious Jefferys Auctioneers in Lostwithiel said they are set to auction off a total of 21 watercolors believed to have been painted by Adolf Hitler. Earlier declared to be authentic, the paintings and sketches, some signed A Hitler, are expected to fetch up to $5,700. They are said to be similar to other known works by the Nazi dictator who once dreamed of being a fine artist. A spokesman for Jefferys Auctioneers, however confirmed that steps were taken to prove the authenticity of the paintings, believed to have been painted between 1915 and 1918, on the border of France and Belgium when Hitler was a corporal in the First World War, but apparently without success. "The paper has been dated and the style is the same though," the spokesman said. Jefferys adds that they were stored for nearly 70 years in a suitcase in an attic until they were discovered in 1986 in the custody of an elderly Belgian woman. The Belgian woman, reportedly approached the auctioneers after they sold a single 1924 Hitler painting last November, a caricature of a Dutch postman, for $9,800. Some of the paintings, which vary from postcard size to 10x8 inches, feature landscapes and buildings. Hitler was turned down twice as a student by the Vienna Academy of Fine Art, before he joined the army.
