Russia Approves Engineering Aid To Lebanon
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - The Russian parliament has approved sending military engineering units to Lebanon in order to aid the war-ravaged nation in its reconstruction efforts. The upper house voted 124-0 in an approval of the aid on Tuesday. No date was announced for the deployment of the aid to Lebanon. Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the unit's presence in Lebanon must be welcomed by "all political forces" in the country. Despite the approval, Moscow made it clear that the units would not take part in peacekeeping operations. Russia has not contributed troops to the 15,000-strong United Nations peacekeeping force in south Lebanon. Lebanon is now in the midst of reconstructing much of the southern areas of the country due to the 34-day war between Israel and Hezbollah that destroyed much of the infrastructure in the southern areas of the nation.
