Israeli Pullout Expected By End Of Week
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - Although Israeli soldiers remain in ten areas of south Lebanon, a senior United Nations official said Monday that it is expected that Israel will have left Lebanon by the end of the week. The official said that he is confident that all Israeli troops will be out of the ten areas soon. "The two parties [Israel and Lebanon] have been delayed. But the withdrawal process has not been stopped. There are no obstructions," French Major Philippe Lebrat, the military assistant to the commander of the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon, told AFP. Lebanese and Israeli officials are to meet with UNIFIL to discuss the finalization of the Israeli pullout from border areas the Jewish state has occupied since the month-long war with Hezbollah ended on August 14. Lebrat said that Israel was present up to two miles inside Lebanon's southern border. He added that the Lebanese army is unable to fully take over areas from Israel because they are not well-equipped enough to tackle the task in a way Israel would like to see.
