USAID To Provide $13 Million For Child Education In Bangladesh
Siddique Islam - All Headline News Foreign Correspondent Dhaka, Bangladesh (AHN) - The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) will provide $13 million for Bangladesh to facilitate early childhood education programs until 2011. According to a press release, the Bangladesh government and USAID signed an agreement in Dhaka at the Economic Relations Division to continue joint activities in education on Tuesday. USAID's early childhood education program target children between ages 3 to 6 to improve their reading and math skills, which help prepare them for success in primary education. Key programs include the production of Sisimpur, the popular children's educational television program, which is aired on Bangladesh Television (BTV). The U.S. agency also supports the SUCCEED preschool education program, which uses innovative teaching techniques and games to teach children how to read and how to count. These programs complement the Bangladesh government's Primary Education Development Program (PEDP-II) and give children a head start in learning and build a solid foundation as they begin their primary education. USAID has provided over $5 billion in development assistance since 1971, with over half of it in food aid. In 2006, the US agency provided $75 million in development assistance to Bangladesh.
