Seven Killed In Luxury Prison Raid
Megan Shannon - All Headline News Staff Writer (AHN) - Inmates were living large in a farm prison in Guatemala with two story homes, Jacuzzis and restaurants they built once inside. Then security forces, likely prompted by an article recently published about the Pavon prison lifestyle, took over the prison killing seven inmates. The inmates tried to fight back throwing hand grenades but were overcome by the 3,000 officers. The prison was taken over by inmates 10 years ago. The guards allegedly allowed non prisoners, cell phones, weapons and other goods inside Pavon. All of the 80 security guards are currently under investigated. Prisoners were originally sent to Pavon so they could grow their own food. But eventually the inmates took over. They built homes and even rented space to build restaurants where they sold chips and homemade stew. They built laboratories where they cooked cocaine, crack, and made liquor behind the prison walls. In fact the leader, Luis Alfonso Zepeda who was slain during the raid, earned about $25,000 a month selling drugs, police said. Interior Minister Carlos Vielmann said, "It's a center where organized crime, drug trafficking, kidnapping, extortion and all kinds of illicit activities were being controlled from."
