Allies Back Israel on IAEA Conference
Komfie Manalo - All Headline News Foreign Correspondent Vienna, Austria (AHN) With the solid backing of its allies, Israel was able to get off the hook as the International Atomic Energy Agency annual conference on Friday failed to adopt a resolution aimed at labeling its nuclear capabilities a threat. Some 20 countries, mainly Arab nations, had been pressing for the passing of a resolution which would call on Israel to give up its ambition to possess nuclear weapons, and become a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. After heated discussions however, the motion was effectively killed when Israel's allies and some other countries prevented a it from going into a vote and struck it off the agenda of the five-day 50th Annual Regular Session of the IAEA General Conference. Meantime, 11 countries including host Austria, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Croatia, Ethiopia, Finland, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan and Thailand, were newly elected to serve on the 35-member IAEA Board of Governors for the 2006-2007 period. The IAEA annual meeting, was attended by high-level delegates from the body's 140 member states.
