Lebanese Look To Ramadan For Support
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - Lebanese are anxiously awaiting the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan in the southern portions of the country. While preparations have not been as grandiose as in recent years, people are preparing for the month of fasting following a 34-day war between Hezbollah and Israel with anticipation. "Ramadan is approaching, it is true, but the blood of our martyrs has not yet dried," Umm Abbas told The Daily Star near Tyre. "I will fast, but I won't hold banquets. I will feed the poor instead," she said. Despite many homes and towns destroyed and damaged from Israeli bombardments, Lebanese remain optimistic about the coming month. Family members abroad have sent money back to Lebanon as a way of helping those whose homes were destroyed. "My son sent me 5,000 euros ($6,300), asking me to hold banquets to feed the needy," one man in the Tyre market said. Ramadan begins on Sunday, according to the leading Shiite cleric who said that astronomers have told him that all signs point to the day as the beginning of the dawn to dusk fast where no food or water may be taken.
