Greek Orthodox Church Attacked With Pipe Bombs In Gaza
Mort Karman - All Headline News Staff Reporter Gaza City (AHN) - A Greek Orthodox church was the latest apparent victim of Muslim outrage over remarks made in a recent speech by the Pope which the Muslims say offended the Prophet Muhammad. Three small pipe bombs were thrown at the church on Friday, say church officials and local police. No one was injured, but there was damage to the church building. One bomb was thrown at the facade of the church. The main entrance was blackened and the blast shattered windows in a van parked nearby. Two other pipebombs landed inside the church compound. Church caretaker Nabil Ayad said the extent of the damage was not yet clear. Earlier in the West bank, Hamas supporters took to the streets shouting slogans against the Pope and waving Hamas flags. In northern Gaza more then 1,000 Islamic Jihad supporters shouted in praise of the Prophet and waved black flags. In Ramaliah, hundreds of Hamas supporters marched around the city center. Since the outcry over the Pope's speech several churches have been burned in the Gaza region. None of them have been Catholic. The Pope is scheduled to meet with envoys of Islamic countries on Monday to try to quell further violence and destruction.
