UN Aid Distribution Not Equal: Refugees
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - The United Nations Relief and Works Agency in Sidon witnessed a sit-in by the Palestinian Popular Committee on Wednesday. The group accused the UNRWA of distributing rotten food to Lebanon's Palestinian refugees. "The UNRWA has distributed putrid food supplies which Palestinians cannot accept," Abed Maqdah, the committee's secretary, told The Daily Star in Lebanon. Maqdah added that the UNRWA was also offering varying aid to the 13 recognized refugee camps in the country. He accused UNRWA of distributing kitchen sets and stationary to some while excluding others. "The UNRWA did not assume its responsibilities in terms of compensating for the damage of inflicted [during the recent Israeli bombardment] on the Ain Al Hilweh refugee camp residents, where more than 90 families became homeless," Maqdah continued. He added that the refugees would not back down until their demands were met by the UN aid organization. UNRWA has not given a response to the committee's requests.
