Nasrallah Gets Date Named After Him
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - As Egyptians prepare for the holy month of Ramadan, date sellers have nicknamed the top fruit after Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. Due to the popularity of the Shiite group's leader, Egypt has made the most expensive date a tribute to the leader. "There is no doubt, it is 'Nasrallah the victorious' who gets first place," Abdou Kashush told AFP, in Cairo. In the tradition of Prophet Mohamed, Muslims tend to break the dawn to dusk fast by eating a date. "Nasrallah" dates will go for 24 Egyptian pounds ($4.20) a kilogram, while other dates named after world leaders are priced lower. "Ahmedinajad" dates go for 18 pounds ($3.15) and "Chavez" dates sell for 14 pounds ($2.40). Egypt is the world's largest date producer with over one million tons produced a year, accounting for 16 percent of the world's production, beating out Iran and Saudi Arabia for the distinction.
