Doctors In Lebanon Threaten Strike
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - Lebanese doctors are threatening a strike if the government does not pay them. The doctors threatened to withhold their services on Wednesday if the government does not "pay up" on overdue salaries. "Doctors made great sacrifices during the war and kept working under [Israeli] bombardment, so the least the government can do is pay them what is rightfully theirs," Mario Aoun, head of the Order of Physicians told reporters. "The official decision for the payments was set on May 18, 2006 by the health minister, Mohamed Khalifeh, before the war, so hiding behind the war as an excuse is not acceptable," Aoun continued. He said that there is no excuse for the ministry's delay in paying over 7 billion Lebanese Lira ($4.5 million) in back salaries for services rendered in the final term of 2005. He also added that the government must pay over 13 billion Lira ($8.5 million) to private doctors.
