Update: Thai Military Seizes Power In Bangkok
Shaveta Bansal - All Headline News Staff Writer Bangkok, Thailand (AHN) - Military tanks rolled through the streets of Bangkok, on Tuesday, circling Prime Minister Thaskin Shinawatra's offices and seizing control of TV stations declaring control of the capital and surrounding areas. Member of Thai military are attempting to seize power with country's beloved King Bhumibol Adulyadej as head of state. Thaksin, who was in New York at the U.N. General Assembly, declared a state of emergency via a government-owned TV station. The cable television station of the Nation newspaper reported that tanks were parked at the Rachadamnoen Road and Royal Plaza close to the royal palace and government offices. The reports of state coup comes just a day after Thaskin said that he may step down as leader of Thailand after the upcoming November elections but would remain in a caretaker role until a successor is chosen. Thaskin has been under considerable pressure to step down amid the allegations of corruption, abuse of power, stifling with media and mishandling a Muslim insurgency in southern Thailand that flared his rule. Opposition to Thaksin, a telecoms billionaire, gained momentum in January when opposition groups accused him of corruption after his family sold a $1.9 billion stake in his Shin Corp to Singapore's state-owned Temasek Holdings without paying taxes.
