Army Chief: Israel To Be Out Of Lebanon By Friday
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - After more than two months in Lebanon, Israeli army chief Dan Halutz told parliament's foreign affairs and defense committee that Israeli troops will be out of Lebanon come Friday. A member of the panel relayed the army chief's comments on Tuesday to media. The source told AFP that Halutz said "he hoped the last troops will leave southern Lebanon by the eve of Rosh Hashana (the Jewish new year which starts Saturday)." Already, Israeli troops have pulled back from 75 percent of the territory they had conquered during the 34-day with Hezbollah. The United Nations-brokered ceasefire requires a complete withdrawal of Israeli troops as international peacekeepers and Lebanese forces take up position in the south. Israel has threatened to remain in Lebanon until they have assurances that Hezbollah is not rearming. Hezbollah has announced that they have remained in the southern portions of the country in order to remain in a defensive position vis a vis Israel.
