Hezbollah Still In Southern Lebanon
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - Over a month has passed since a ceasefire agreement ended the 34-day war between Hezbollah and Israel, but the Shiite group said they are maintaining a presence in the south of Lebanon. Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah said last week that guerillas will stay in the south despite the deployment of Lebanese and United Nations forces in the region. "The resistance is present south of the Litani River and in the whole south of Lebanon," Nasrallah told Al Jazeera. "We regret the Israeli officials lie to their people by saying they have ousted Hezbollah from south Lebanon and that they will not let it return," Hezbollah's chief added. Israel will most likely be perturbed by the announcement as the driving force behind the 34-day war with the Shiite group was aimed at driving it out of Lebanon. "We are present at the border. Before July 12 [the beginning of the Israeli offensive] we publicly set up surveillance posts which we have dismantled ... but nobody can prevent us from being present on our territory or from defending our territory, our honor and our homeland," Nasrallah said.
