Solidarity Campaign For Lebanon Comes To An End
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Cairo, Egypt (AHN) - With the war in Lebanon over a month gone, movements across the region are coming to an end. In Egypt's capital, Li Beirut (For Beirut), a conglomeration of artists and musicians who had come together in support of Lebanon had their last solidarity performance. Li Beirut was designed by a group of friends who decided a few weeks into the 34-day war that ended August 14, that they needed to do something to show their support for what they call their Arab brothers and sisters. "It was an idea for one night of events in solidarity, then it became a campaign ... we had no idea that it would turn out so well but that is due to Egyptians wanting to support Lebanon," Mohamed Yousry, one of the campaigns founders and organizers, said. "It was an expression of solidarity and we never expected it to get as big as it did," Yousry added. Li Beirut put on art exhibitions, concerts and sold t-shirts and paraphernalia in order to raise money for Lebanon, which was greatly damaged by Israeli bombing campaigns across the country. According to Yousry, Li Beirut raised LE 45,000 ($7800) that they will send to NGOs in Lebanon to help with reconstruction of cultural programs. Yousry said that which organizations will receive the money has yet to be determined.
