Update: 150 People Injured In Hungary Protests
Nidhi Sharma - All Headline News Staff Writer Budapest, Hungary (AHN) - About 150 people have been injured in the violent attacks where protesters clashed with police and stormed the headquarters of Budapest. The attacks were in response to a leaked recording of Hungary's prime minister admitting officials had lied about the economy. State Television reported that about 102 police officers were injured in the attack, one of whom suffered serious head injuries. Hungarian Prime Minister, Ferenc Gyurcsany, said that the overnight riots were "the longest and darkest night" for the country since the end of communism in 1989. The protestors demanded the resignation of the PM but Gyurcsany has refused to resign. The AP reports that several thousand police reinforcements were called to the capital from across the country but the police could drive out the protestors from the TV building only after 3 a.m., more than five hours after the incidents started. The area is adjacent to the National Bank of Hungary and the U.S. Embassy. Justice Minister Jozsef Petretei, who also oversees the police force, submitted his resignation because of the outbreak of violence, but his offer was rejected by Gyurcsany.
