Opposition Calls Road-Rail-Waterway Blockade, Strike In Bangladesh
Siddique Islam - All Headline News Foreign Correspondent Dhaka, Bangladesh (AHN) - The Awami League-led 14-party opposition combine on Monday announced a fresh agitation programs including a road and rail barricade and a countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal (general strike) to force the holding of parliamentary polls under a reformed caretaker government and election commission. Opposition leader in Parliament and Awami league President Sheikh Hasina declared the fresh program from a large grand rally at the historic Paltan maidan in Dhaka amidst a thunderous applause from thousands of supporters who had gathered at the venue. As part of the program, a nationwide road, rail and waterway blockade would be enforced on Wednesday followed by a countrywide dawn-to-dusk general strike on Thursday. From early Monday morning, thousands of people from different parts of the country poured into Dhaka for the grand rally venue, which had been under a tight security umbrella since on Sunday. Announcing the blockade and general strike during her 37-minute speech, Sheikh Hasina urged the people to spontaneously participate in the programs to scale up pressure on the government. "Carry forward this movement, let's see how the alliance government sustains in power."
