India And Pakistan Announce Resumption Of Talks At Nonaligned Nations Meet
Mort Karman - All Headline News Staff Reporter Havana, Cuba (AHN) - The on again-off again peace negotiations between India and Pakistan appear to be on again after a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Sing and Pakistan President Pervez Musharrif at the Nonaligned Nation Movement conference which is taking place in Havana. India and Pakistan have fought several wars since the 1948 partition of the two countries over parts of Kashmir, a province which the U.N. awarded to India in the original partition, but which Pakistan claims belongs to it. India blames Pakistan for not clamping down on violent terrorists which it claims are sponsored by Pakistan while Pakistan denies any involvement with the militants. Tensions between the two nuclear powers have at times escalated into minor border skirmishes between troops of the nations, but neither side has thus far used atomic weapons. Minor progress has been made by the two countries, such as the reestablishment of a bus line between Indian Kashmir and Pakistan, but the deep problems remain. Pakistani President Mushariff has insisted Kashmir is a part of his country and says he wants it back, or at least a referendum vote by the residents of the disputed province.
