Canada To Send More Tanks And Troops To NATO Effort In Afghanistan
Mort Karman - All Headline News Staff Reporter Ottawa, Canada (AHN) - Despite mounting calls to withdraw from Afghanistan amidst heavy troop casualties, Canada's Defense Department says it is sending 200 additional soldiers and armored units to the region. Canadian leaders say they will also send heavy weapons and support equipment to the NATO-led effort to fight the remnants of the Taliban. The reinforcements include infantry from the Quebec Royal 22nd Regiment, a Leopard tank unit from Edmonton, a special anti-mortar unit and military engineers from Canada's provincial reconstruction team. The announcement comes after NATO commanders issued a call for reinforcements amidst increasing Taliban and insurgent attacks, which are quickly becoming more and more effective at claiming military and civilian lives. Afghan President Karzai is expected to come to Ottawa and Montreal next week to thank Canada for it's military and humanitarian support. Karzai is also scheduled to lay a wreath at the National War memorial. Conservative Prime Minister Steven Harper continues to suffer under political pressure, even from within his own party, centered on the mounting loss of Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan.
