Yemeni Guards Foil Attacks By Suicide Bombers
Yvonne Lee - All Headline News Staff Reporter San'a Yemen (AHN) - Yemeni authorities foil plans by suicide bombers to blow up two oil installations by using cars filled with explosives. The planned attack came after a videotape aired Monday showing al-Qaeda's No. 2 leader, Ayman al-Zawahri, threatening to attack oil facilities in the Gulf. Four bombers and a guard were killed in the attacks on Friday. No group claimed responsibility for the assaults. Prime Minister Abdul-Kader Bajammal told the official news agency "investigators have uncovered all the details related to the two operations and the identity of the perpetrators." Fears of an al-Qaeda attack were heightened after 23 members of the terrorist group escaped from a Yemeni jail in February. Fourteen inmates are still at large. The four bombers launched their attacks in two groups during shift changes at the oil facilities. In the first attack, two suicide bombers drove "at great speed" toward the Dubba Port. The Interior Ministry said in a statement that they were trying to blow up storage tanks filled with "a huge amount of oil." The statement said guards "managed to blow up the rigged cars before they reached their targets." A security guard was killed, as well as the attackers. The second attack took place at a refinery in Mareb. One car was stopped outside the compound, but the other was able to get through the gates. The |
