Beijing Discusses Contingency Measures 2008 Olympics
Josephine Roque - All Headline News Staff Writer Beijing, China (AHN) - Beijing is looking at dozens of contingency measures for the 2008 Olympics. Such suggestions range from making it an official holiday to limiting the use of cars. Spokesman for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Environmental and Construction Headquarters Office, Zhou Jiawang, acknowledged the news reports regarding the measures but added that nothing has been finalized saying, "Everything is still under discussion." The Beijing Morning Post reports that the city is also thinking of hospitalizing all mentally ill people and cutting out the city's 1 million migrant workers. Zhou rejects that the order for wide-scale expulsion would be done. He explained that it was only suggested by one of the advisers during the meeting. Beijing has been known to go into great lengths to decrease protest or remedy the capital's surroundings. During its 1993 bid for the 2000 Olympics, Beijing got rid of beggars, required the handicap to stay at home and shut down smokestack industries.
