Thousands March To Demand Resignation Of Taiwanese President
Yvonne Lee - All Headline News Staff Reporter (AHN) - Tens of thousands of protestors marched in Taiwan to demand the resignation of President Chen Shui-bian, who has been embroiled in a corruption scandal involving relatives and advisers. Demonstrators have held vigil outside the presidential office in Taipei day and night. They wore red to symbolize anger while chanting. Police estimate 320,000 people participated in the march, while organizers say there were up to 750,000 demonstrators. Former ruling Democratic Progressive Party chairman Shih Ming-teh led the march. He pledged to continue the protests until Chen resigns. Businessman Jesse Wang tells AFP, "President Chen had promised us clean politics when he was elected in 2000, but now see what he has given the people." Campaigners are apparently thinking about calling a national strike to pressure Chen into resigning. Last weekend, about 90,000 people protested in the event that launched the movement to push Chen out of office.
