U.S. Offers To Mediate Talks On Electoral Reforms In Bangladesh
Siddique Islam - All Headline News Foreign Correspondent Dhaka, Bangladesh (AHN) - U.S. Ambassador to Bangladesh Patricia A Butenis has advised the main opposition Awami League to sit across the table with the government to end the persisting standoff on electoral reforms. The American envoy offered her country's readiness to mediate in the crisis-management dialogue between the two warring sides. "You sit together and bring an end to the crisis...If you are interested, the U.S. is ready to mediate," the Awami League General Secretary Abdul Jalil, MP quoted Butenis as saying at a meeting with him in Dhaka on Thursday evening. In reply to the U.S. offer, he said only the government's sincere effort would make the negotiations possible. Jalil was talking to reporters after the meeting with the ambassador at his Gulshan residence in the city. U.S. envoy told newsmen that Awami League was keen to sit with the government on the electoral reform issues. 'We hope that both the parties will evolve a fruitful solution through dialogue.' Earlier on the day, Prime Minister of Bangladesh Khaleda Zia also called for dialogue between the secretaries-general of her party and the main opposition Awami League to resolve the issue before they hand over power to caretaker government.
