Kidnapped Israeli Soldier Sends Letter Home
Mort Karman - All Headline News Staff Reporter Jersuleam, Israel(AHN) - A report in a Palestinian newspaper, Al-Ayyam, claims Israel has received a letter said to be from kidnapped Israeli Defense Forces Cpl. Gilad Shalit and addressed to his father, Noam. The newspaper reported that a Hamas delegation from Damascus gave the letter to Egyptian officials in Cairo. Egypt passed it on to former deputy Shin Bet head Ofer Dekel, who is in charge of dealing with the affairs of the kidnapped soldiers. Both Shalet's father, Noam Shalet, and Israeli security officials refused to discuss the letter with reporters. On Thursday a senior IDF official said Shalet was still alive and was being held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said on Thursday he was optimistic about Shalit being released in the near future, though he did not set a date. Hamas officials have denied any progress in talks aimed at freeing the soldier. The letter is reported to have been hand written by Shalit telling his father he was doing well.
