U.S. Wants Serious International Pressure On Sudan
Matthew Borghese - All Headline News Staff Writer Washington, D.C. (AHN) - The U.S. is calling on the United Nations (U.N.) and other nations to step up and do more to aid the crisis in Sudan. U.S. Department of State spokesman, Sean McCormack says countries need to pressure the Sudanese government into taking further action, and the U.N. needs to develop a force to restore peace to Darfur. McCormack says the U.S. wants to see troops from the African Union (AU) deployment in Darfur form the backbone of a U.N. peacekeeping mission in Sudan. McCormack says, "we would hope that countries from around the world would see fit to make a contribution to a UN force," adding that "the AU has said that it would also look within itself to see what else it could do." However, McCormack says, "the reality is that there is a limited supply of competent and capable combat power throughout the world. It's a lot less than you would think." "As for Sudan assenting to this force or not, we are still looking for them to agree to this force, follow through on their promise. The history of dealing with this Sudanese Government has been that they do respond over time to concerted diplomatic pressure." During his briefing, McCormack explains, "We have been pressing hard on this... We're going to continue to do our part to be out front on this issue, to press as hard as we possibly can.
