Lebanon Says Israeli Fence Must Go
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Cairo, Egypt (AHN) - The United Nations peacekeepers in Lebanon have asked the Israeli army to take down a barbed-wire barrier that Beirut says is located on Lebanese territory. Israel has denied that the fence was on Lebanese soil. Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora protested the barrier's presence and a UN spokesman in Lebanon said the peacekeeping force wants the wall down as soon as possible. "We expect them to do so as quickly as possible," Alexander Ivanko said. The Israeli military says it is repairing a fence created following the 2000 UN resolution and denied that it was on Lebanese territory. At the height of the Israeli invasion of Lebanon during the 34-day war there were an estimated 30,000 troops inside Lebanon, however, the majority of those have withdrawn from Lebanon since the end of the war on August 14. Some remain according to Mahmoud Sheikh, who was harvesting his crops when Israeli soldiers were seen approaching. "The Israeli soldiers moved in and began unfurling their wire in the middle of my land," Sheikh told The Associated Press.
