Initial War Probe Finds Olmert Government Guilty Of Negligence
Ryan R. Jones - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Jerusalem, Israel (AHN) - An initial investigation into the handling of the recent Lebanon war found that the government of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is guilty of failing to adequately care for the rocket-battered home front. The report which concluded on Tuesday was compiled by a subcommittee of the powerful Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee that included lawmakers from across the political spectrum. In it the government is accused of having failed Israel's northern residents by not declaring a state of emergency during the conflict. Such a declaration would have put in motion essential security measures, such as the evacuation of the towns most hit by Hezbollah's relentless rocket barrage. It would also have provided the affected populations with adequate financial compensation. The report also took aim at the Israel Defense Forces Home Front Command for failing to call up all of the reservists at its disposal. The added manpower would have made caring for the nearly two million Israelis who were forced to flee or live in bomb shelters much easier. Olmert continues to resist the establishment of a full state commission of inquiry into his government's handling of the war.
