Israel's Lebanon War Commander Quits
Ryan R. Jones - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Jerusalem, Israel (AHN) - The man responsible for overseeing Israel's military efforts in Lebanon this summer, Northern Command chief Maj.-Gen. Udi Adam, announced Tuesday that he would retire the moment the last Israeli soldier returned from Lebanon. The move was seen by most as a reaction to Adam's effective replacement midway through the conflict when Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Dan Halutz appointed his deputy, Gen. Moshe Kaplinsky, to take charge of ground operations in Lebanon. Halutz's decision came after Adam hinted that the nation's military and political leaderships were mismanaging the war against Hezbollah. The chief of staff accepted the resignation on Tuesday, said an IDF spokesman who spoke to Ha'aretz. According to a report in Israel's Ma'ariv newspaper, Adam hopes his stepping down will serve as an example for all those who should accept responsibility for the nation's failure to meet its original war goals. The general is backing calls for a full state commission of inquiry into the handling of the war, and noted he is confident "the truth will come out" about what really took place at the decision-making levels during the crisis.
