Canada PM Trying To Bolster Support For Afghanistan Troop Deployment
Mort Karman - All Headline News Staff Reporter Ottawa, Canada (AHN) - Canadian Prime Minister Steven Harper says that his country must accept the sacrifices in order to combat terrorism, not only in far away places, but also in Canada. "As the horrors of September 11th so clearly illustrate,the horrors of the world may not go away if we turn a blind eye to them,no matter how far off the may be," the PM said. "These horrors cannot be stopped unless some amongst us are willing to accept enormous sacrifice and risk to themselves," the P.M. commented. Flanked by relatives of Canadian Forces Afghan troops and 9/11 victims, the Prime Minister, speaking in Parliament's Hall of Honour, linked the mission in Afghanistan to the September 11th horror and said that terrorism in Afghanistan must be eliminated to ensure a better future not only for Afghans, but also for Canada and the entire world. Twenty-four Canadians were killed in the September 11 terrorist attacks. As mounting casualties occur in the Afghanistan operation Prime Minister Harper has been accused by opposition politicians of being to close to and over-involved with the policies of U.S. President George Bush. Canada has a long history of close cooperation with the United States and England in contributing troops for military situations, though Canada is known mostly for it's peace keeping forces.
