NATO Chief Conducts Talks On Afghan Reinforcements
Josephine Roque - All Headline News Staff Writer Brussels, Belgium (AHN) - The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer led a meeting with alliance ambassadors regarding Afghanistan troop needs. "The North Atlantic Council (NAC) will discuss troop reinforcements in Afghanistan. The secretary general wanted to present the results of the meeting of NATO defense chiefs," according to Scheffer's spokesperson, James Appathurai. Appathurai said the talks were to brief NATO's 26 member countries about the Afghanistan situation and find means to boost troops levels. Alliance military chief U.S. General James Jones had rallied for the allies to send more troops. The NATO is up against a fierce Taliban-led insurgency in southern Afghanistan. This year, an estimated 90 foreign soldiers have already perished in combat in Afghanistan due to increased violence connected to the fundamentalist Taliban movement. NATO assumed control of southern Afghanistan on July 31.
