NDI: Government In Dhaka Should Follow Constitutional Outline
Siddique Islam - All Headline News Foreign Correspondent Dhaka, Bangladesh (AHN) - Washington-based National Democratic Institute (NDI) has suggested that the caretaker government in Bangladesh should be formed in line with exiting rules provided in the constitution and it should be allowed to discharge its duties in a transparent, impartial and non-partisan manner. "The Caretaker Government should be formed according to the rules provided in the constitution and (should) discharge its duties in a transparent, impartial and non-partisan manner," Tom Daschle, former Majority and Minority Leader of the US Senate told a press conference in Dhaka on Monday. The NDI team that made a number of recommendations mostly focusing on the Election Commission said it was not too late for major political parties to sit for dialogue and narrow differences to hold the next general election in a free, fair and impartial manner. "There is sufficient time for government, political parties and civil society to work together to address the deficiencies and build confidence in the electoral process and electoral outcomes," Daschle added. In the wake of militant and grenade attacks and bomb blasts over the last few years, NDI delegates expressed "grave concern" over terrorism and said terrorist acts by extremist groups "may disrupt the coming election."
