Israel To Supply India With Advanced Anti-Aircraft System
Ryan R. Jones - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Tel Aviv, Israel (AHN) - India is set to purchase an advanced Israeli-made anti-aircraft system to bolster its aging defenses, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported on Sunday. New Delhi has been working for years to modernize its large military, and Israel has emerged as one of its primary suppliers of advanced arms. The latest deal involves the Surface-to-Air PYthon and DERby (SPYDER) truck-mounted air defense system, which uses a combination of active radar missiles and infrared missiles to track and intercept jets, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles and precision guided munitions. Developed by RAFAEL, a leading Israeli defense contractor, the SPYDER can track up to 60 targets at a time. According to senior Indian defense officials cited by the PTI, New Delhi will purchase four of the systems for roughly $240 million USD. In related news, the German air force has ordered $8 million USD worth of Israeli-made personal survival radios (PSRs), reported Reuters. Tadiran Spectralink Ltd. won the contract, which is expected to lead to future orders for more PSRs and logistic support packages. As Germany begins to integrate the system, Tadiran's mother company, Elbit Systems Ltd. expects similar orders from other European nations. Elbit is Israel's largest publicly traded defense firm.
