Russia To Send Military Engineers To Lebanon
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - Russia will send a contingent of military engineers to Lebanon in order to help in the reconstruction of the nation, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday, Interfax news agency reported. This comes after Moscow's Foreign Minister said Russia would offer financial assistance to the war-torn nation. "A corresponding request should be sent to the Federation Council as soon as official request is received from the Lebanese parliament," President Putin said during a meeting with cabinet ministers. The move comes as a surprise, especially after Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that they would funnel money through United Nations organizations to help in the reconstruction process. "We will offer concrete assistance in rebuilding the infrastructure - roads and bridges," the Foreign Minister said last Thursday. Beirut is expected to send a request to Moscow as soon as possible in order to have the military engineers arrive in Lebanon as soon as they are able to deploy.
