Israeli Patrol Boat Fires On Fishermen In South Lebanon
Joseph S. Mayton - All Headline News Middle East Correspondent Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - Three Lebanese fishing boats were fired upon by an Israeli patrol boat on Saturday night, two days after Tel Aviv lifted a maritime blockade on their northern neighbor. The Lebanese army also reported that an Israeli reconnaissance aircraft flew over Lebanese air space on Saturday. No casualties were reported in the incidents off the coast near the town of Naqura, some 2.5 miles from the Israeli border. According to Khalil Taha, the president of the fishermen's union in Tyre, the boats did not enter Israeli territorial waters. A line of bouys that extend ten nautical miles into the Mediterranean Sea marks the maritime border. Sources in the south said that even before the war between Hezbollah and Israel that began on July 12, Israeli patrol boats would enter Lebanese waters and fire upon fishermen. The source added that fishermen have even been arrested during such raids. Israel officially ended an eight-week air and sea blockade on Lebanon on Thursday and Friday, respectively. Beirut has welcomed the move, saying that now the country is able to begin full reconstruction efforts.
